Since the mid-seventies, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased sharply for both adults and children. Data from two NHANES surveys show that among adults aged 20–74 years, the prevalence of obesity increased from 15.0% (in the 1976–1980 survey) to 32.9% (in the 2003–2004 survey).
The two surveys also show increases in overweight among children and teens. For children aged 2–5 years, the prevalence of overweight increased from 5.0% to 13.9%; for those aged 6–11 years, prevalence increased from 6.5% to 18.8%; and for those aged 12–19 years, the prevalence increased from 5.0% to 17.4%.
These increasing rates raise concern because of their implications for Americans’ health. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions, including the following:
Hypertension
Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
Type 2 diabetes
Coronary heart disease
Stroke
Gallbladder disease
Osteoarthritis
Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
Although one of the national health objectives for the year 2010 is to reduce the prevalence of obesity among adults to less than 15%, current data from the CDC indicate that the situation is worsening rather than improving.
The Thomas Weight Management Institute has been developed to provide weight loss assistance for any individual. Current programs focus on individual weight loss, but the Thomas Weight Management Institute will go beyond the individual to also provide loss assistance for children and families. We believe that weight loss and on-going weight management is more successful when participated in by the entire family unit. Our program advocates that individuals and families can re-train themselves to live an on-going healthy and successful lifestyle. A key tenet of our program is to make an impact in individual lives to provide better health and personal satisfaction. It’s time to feel better.
We have designed a team approach to weight loss. Our team will consist first of a physician to examine, evaluate, and prescribe the individualized weight loss program. A psychologist trained in eating disorders will be available for thought restructuring. An exercise and diet trainer will be available to assist in the individualized program development and on-going encouragement and accountability. A dietician will be available for dietary counseling of individuals that have special medical needs and illnesses. A healthy cooking chef will be available for education and teaching of healthy food preparation.
Reaching your ideal weight and having the knowledge to maintain it is the goal of all the members on our team. Everyone here at the Thomas Weight Management Institute is committed to your long-term health.
Personal Weight Management
At the Thomas Weight Management Institute, we focus on the individual. We provide for each person an individualized treatment program designed specifically for him or her. Our team will assist in designing, providing, and encouraging the individual in that program. Our program will start with a thorough physical examination, which will include a physical exam, an array of lab tests, and ECG analysis for the appropriate individual. A weekly follow up plan will be implemented at the start. Later, a bimonthly follow up plan will be implemented as each individual becomes knowledgeable and successful in his or her weight loss. Weight loss will be assisted through dietary changes, exercise implementation, and prescribed appetite suppressants for the appropriate individuals. Education will be provided to give the tools necessary to maintain your success and keep a healthier and happier you.
Family Weight Management
We love to see mom lose weight and become the healthier and happier person that she deserves to be. But we don’t stop there. We also want dad to lose those extra pounds and begin to exercise and eat healthier. As partners begin to embark on this journey together, they will provide for each other the stimulus for consistency and accountability. When the parents are working together, they are now able to lay a foundation for their children. Sometimes this can be quite challenging to re-teach children new dietary and exercise habits. On-going maintenance is now much more attainable.
Children’s Weight Loss
Obesity among our children has become an epidemic in this country and around the world. Unfortunately, very few facilities are addressing this issue. We believe that at the Thomas Weight Management Institute, children’s weight loss is a critical issue. Our children’s future depends on their ability to understand healthy eating and exercise habits and apply them to their lives.
The stresses on our children have increased in recent years. We now see a sedentary group of people that are “emotional eaters.” We want to help identify those areas of struggle and assist in finding a more successful lifestyle. We want our children to lead the attack against obesity.
We provide a supervised program structured to assist the parent and child in making positive nutritional changes in the child’s daily diet to lose weight and increase mobility, leading to a healthier and happier lifestyle
